I just saw this year’s Oscar favourite, The King’s Speech, a magnificently unassuming masterpiece. It’s even been given the Royal seal of approval; Palace sources declare that the Queen herself called it both “moving” and enjoyable”. Indeed, Colin Firth proves that, artistically, he can do so much more than put on a white shirt and get wet, yet the most captivating part of the film for me was the portrayal of Wallis Simpson, the infamous American socialite, seductress and divorcée. Her marriage to King Edward VIII caused the latter’s abdication from the throne and subsequent chaos throughout the British Empire; the intrigue of which is played out beautifully throughout the story.
We are introduced to Mrs Simpson in a pivotal scene at Balmoral Castle, wearing the most incredible aubergine evening dress and a Van Cleef and Arpels tassel necklace…backwards. I adore this look. The deep scoop of a backless dress coupled with a glittering pendant or strings of pearls; to me just the most elegant and understatedly sexy way to wear a piece of jewellery.
